While most greenhouses on Mars are growing food for the colonists, the series of buildings on Albor Tholus has a different purpose: to grow plants that will one day live unsheltered on the surface.

Many of the greenhouses have an atmosphere inside that is a cross between martian and terrestrial gases. The plants that survive the best in this mixture will go on to the next stage - a little closer to a true Mars atmosphere.
