South Polar Region

The southern polar cap of Mars is not made of water ice, but rather carbon dioxide ice. During the winter, temperatures barely reach above 150 Kelvin (minus 123 Celsius). This explorer is testing the depth of the permafrost near the northernmost extension of the polar cap.
